Writing Assignment
The Tell-Tale Heart
Standard: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
What to Do
Assignment Overview"The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe is a chilling story narrated by a The Tell-Tale Heart
1
True! - nervous - very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am. But why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth.
2
It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture - a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.
3
Every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it - oh, so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, so that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in! I moved it slowly - very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man's sleep. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. And then, when my head was well in the room, I undid the lantern cautiously - for the hinges creaked. I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye.
4
And this I did for seven long nights - every night just at midnight - but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye. And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into his chamber and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he had passed the night.
5
Upon the eighth night, I was more than usually cautious in opening the door. The old man sprang up in bed, crying out "Who's there?" I kept quite still and said nothing. For a whole hour I did not move a muscle. In the meantime I did not hear him lie down. He was still sitting up in the bed listening - just as I have done, night after night. Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. I knew the sound well. Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted me. Vocabulary Bank
Writing Steps
1
Identify Story Elements
List the key story elements you find:
Setting (where, when, atmosphere): - ... Characters (who they are, what they are like): - ... Plot (main events and conflict): - ... Which elements seem to AFFECT each other? For example, does the setting change how a character behaves? Before analyzing interactions, identify the key elements in this story.
Story elements include: - Setting: Where and when the story takes place (time, place, atmosphere) - Characters: The people in the story (traits, motivations, relationships) - Plot: The sequence of events (conflict, rising action, climax, resolution) - Conflict: The central problem or tension Read "The Tell-Tale Heart" and identify these elements.
Scoring Guidance — Step 1
Look for:
Main Idea Detail / Evidence 1 Detail / Evidence 2 Detail / Evidence 3
2
Analyze Element Interaction
Describe one way story elements interact:
1. Element A: What is the first element? (setting, character trait, plot event) 2. Element B: What is the second element? 3. The interaction: How does Element A SHAPE or INFLUENCE Element B? 4. Evidence: What specific details from the text show this interaction? Use interaction language: - "The setting shapes the character by..." - "Because of [character trait], [plot event] happens..." - "The [atmosphere/time/place] causes the character to..." Now analyze how story elements INTERACT - how one element SHAPES or INFLUENCES another.
How does the setting of the old man's dark room shape the narrator's actions and mental state? Think about questions like: - How does the setting affect the characters' behavior or feelings? - How does a character's personality shape the events of the plot? - How does the conflict change the characters? - How does the time or place make certain events possible? Find your FIRST example of elements interacting.
Scoring Guidance — Step 2
Look for:
How does one element CHANGE or AFFECT another?
Think about cause and effect between elements
Look for moments where the setting forces a character to act differently
Support your answer with details from the story
Sentence Starters
In the text, the author shows that ___.
The author writes, "___," which shows ___.
This is important because ___.
Overall, the text shows that ___.
3
Find a Second Interaction
Describe a SECOND, different interaction between story elements:
1. Element A: What is the first element? 2. Element B: What is the second element? 3. The interaction: How does Element A shape or influence Element B? 4. What this adds: How does this interaction differ from your first? What new understanding does it provide? Think about: Do elements influence each other in BOTH directions? Does the setting shape the character AND does the character's response change the situation? Find a SECOND interaction between story elements - one that is different from your first.
Look for interactions that go in a DIFFERENT direction or involve different elements: - If your first was setting -> character, try character -> plot - If your first was character -> events, try setting -> conflict - Elements can influence each other in BOTH directions How does the setting of the old man's dark room shape the narrator's actions and mental state?
Scoring Guidance — Step 3
Look for:
Look for a DIFFERENT type of interaction
Do elements influence each other back and forth?
Try involving a different combination of elements
What does this interaction REVEAL that your first one did not?
Sentence Starters
In the text, the author shows that ___.
The author writes, "___," which shows ___.
This is important because ___.
Overall, the text shows that ___.
4
Explain the Impact
Write 3-4 sentences explaining the overall impact of element interactions:
1. How do your two interactions work TOGETHER to shape the story? 2. What would change if one element were different? (e.g., different setting, different character trait) 3. What do these interactions reveal about how the dark, confined setting interacts with the narrator's obsession? Use analytical language: - "The interactions between setting and character reveal..." - "These elements work together to create..." - "If the setting were different, the character would..." - "The interplay of elements shows that..." Now step back and explain the BIGGER PICTURE of how elements interact in this story.
You have found two interactions. What do they reveal about how this story works? Think about: - How do the interactions TOGETHER shape the story's meaning? - Would the story be different if the setting were changed? If a character were different? - What does the interplay between elements tell us about how the dark, confined setting interacts with the narrator's obsession?
Scoring Guidance — Step 4
Look for:
Zoom out - how do the interactions fit together?
What would CHANGE if you altered one element?
How do the interactions shape the story's meaning?
What does this teach us about how stories work?
Sentence Starters
In the text, the author shows that ___.
The author writes, "___," which shows ___.
This is important because ___.
Overall, the text shows that ___.
5
Write Complete Analysis
Write a complete analysis paragraph (6-8 sentences) that:
1. Introduces the key story elements in "The Tell-Tale Heart" 2. Analyzes your first element interaction with evidence 3. Analyzes your second element interaction with evidence 4. Explains the overall impact of how elements shape each other 5. Concludes with an insight about how the dark, confined setting interacts with the narrator's obsession Use transitions like: first, additionally, as a result, this interaction shows, the interplay reveals, ultimately... Bring everything together into a complete analysis of how story elements interact.
How does the setting of the old man's dark room shape the narrator's actions and mental state? Your analysis should show: - The key story elements (setting, characters, plot) - How they interact and shape each other - The impact of these interactions on the story - Specific evidence from the text
Scoring Guidance — Step 5
Look for:
Start by introducing the key elements
Describe each interaction with evidence
Explain the bigger picture of how elements work together
End with insight about what the interactions reveal
Sentence Starters
In the text, the author shows that ___.
The author writes, "___," which shows ___.
This is important because ___.
Overall, the text shows that ___.
