Grammar Foundations: Grade 3 Practice
Standard: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking, including regular and irregular verbs, simple verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement.
What to Do
Assignment OverviewStep into GRAMMAR DETECTIVE mode! You'll hunt down irregular verbs, subject-verb mismatches, and missing punctuation in dialogue and possessives, then rewrite each sentence cleanly. Phase 1: Identify the Error
1
Yesterday I runned all the way to school.
Why: The past tense of 'run' is 'ran,' not 'runned.' Some verbs are tricky because they don't follow the regular rules!
2
My dog catched the ball in the air!
Why: The past tense of 'catch' is 'caught,' not 'catched.' It's an irregular verb, so it changes in a special way.
3
Last week we goed to a birthday party at the park.
Why: The past tense of 'go' is 'went,' not 'goed.' This is one of those verbs that changes completely!
4
Tomorrow I walk to my friend's house after school.
Why: Since this is about tomorrow, we need future tense: 'Tomorrow I will walk to my friend's house.' The word 'tomorrow' tells us it hasn't happened yet.
5
The dogs runs around the yard every morning.
Why: 'The dogs' is more than one dog, so we say 'run,' not 'runs.' When the subject is plural, the verb doesn't need the 's.'
6
She have a cute little kitten at home.
Why: With 'she,' we say 'has,' not 'have.' She has a kitten. He has, she has, it has - but I have, you have, they have!
7
My friends plays soccer at recess every day.
Why: 'My friends' is more than one person, so we say 'play,' not 'plays.' The verb should match: 'My friends play soccer.'
8
The bird in the tree sing a pretty song.
Why: 'The bird' is just one bird, so it should be 'sings,' not 'sing.' One bird sings, but two birds sing.
9
Mom said Dinner is ready!
Why: When someone is talking, we need a comma and quotation marks: Mom said, "Dinner is ready!" The quotation marks show the exact words someone said.
10
That is Sarahs backpack on the chair.
Why: When something belongs to someone, we add an apostrophe and 's.' It should be 'Sarah's backpack' to show the backpack belongs to Sarah.
11
The teacher asked Where is your homework
Why: This sentence needs a comma after 'asked,' quotation marks around the teacher's words, and a question mark at the end: The teacher asked, "Where is your homework?"
12
My cats favorite toy is a little red ball.
Why: We need an apostrophe to show the toy belongs to the cat: 'My cat's favorite toy.' The apostrophe tells us the cat owns the toy.
13
My brother and I ate pizza for dinner last night.
Why: This sentence is correct! 'Ate' is the right past tense of 'eat,' and the subject and verb agree perfectly.
14
She ran to the playground and played on the swings.
Why: This sentence is correct! 'Ran' is the right past tense of 'run,' and 'played' is past tense too. Both verbs match!
15
Dad said, "Let's go get ice cream!"
Why: This sentence is correct! There is a comma after 'said,' and the quotation marks go around exactly what Dad said. Nice job spotting a good sentence!
16
The baby birds fly out of the nest every spring.
Why: This sentence is correct! 'The baby birds' is plural, and 'fly' is the right verb for a plural subject. Everything matches!
