Writing Assignment
The Homework Debate
Standard: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information, including introducing the topic, stating an opinion, providing reasons supported by facts and details, linking opinion and reasons, and providing a concluding statement.
What to Do
Assignment OverviewIn this assignment, you will think about whether students should have homework every night. You will read a passage about the different sides of the homework debate. Then you will write a 3-paragraph opinion essay that tells the reader what YOU think and why. Should Kids Have Homework?
1
Homework has been part of school for a very long time. Teachers give homework so that students can practice what they learned in class. Many teachers and parents believe that homework helps students remember important ideas and builds good study habits. Research shows that students who do homework regularly often do better on tests.
2
However, not everyone agrees. Some experts say that too much homework can cause stress, especially for younger students. Kids who spend hours on homework may not have time for other important things, like playing outside, spending time with family, or following their hobbies. Some studies show that for students in elementary school, homework does not always help them learn more.
3
There is also the question of fairness. Some students have a quiet place to do homework and parents who can help them. Other students may not have those things. This can make homework harder for some kids than for others.
4
Many schools are trying new ideas. Some teachers give less homework but make it more meaningful. Others let students choose their own homework projects. The debate about homework continues, but one thing is clear: everyone wants what is best for students. Vocabulary Bank

Homework is something almost every student deals with. Some people think homework helps students learn more, while others think kids need more free time after school. What do you think?
Before you share your opinion, make sure you understand the topic. Note: This step helps you think. It will not be part of your final essay.
