Assignment Overview

Welcome to SENTENCE ANALYST - where you will sharpen the analytical skills
that strong writers depend on every day!

Great ideas about innovation and discovery deserve clear, precise sentences.
When sentence structure breaks down, even the most brilliant insight can lose
its impact. Your job is to diagnose problems and apply targeted fixes.

In this exercise, you will investigate:
- FRAGMENTS (incomplete thoughts missing essential parts!)
- RUN-ONS and COMMA SPLICES (independent clauses improperly joined!)
- AGREEMENT ERRORS (subjects and verbs that clash!)
- TENSE SHIFTS (inconsistent timelines that confuse readers!)

Think of yourself as an editor reviewing drafts before publication.
Each step will challenge your reasoning, and by the end, you will have the
analytical precision of a professional proofreader!

Throughout history, human beings have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for innovation, transforming the way we live, communicate, and understand the world. From ancient inventions like the printing press to modern breakthroughs in renewable energy and space exploration, each discovery builds on the curiosity and persistence of those who came before.

Step 1: Identify Errors
Read each sentence below. Mark whether it is CORRECT, a FRAGMENT, RUN-ON, COMMA SPLICE, AGREEMENT error, or TENSE SHIFT. Then briefly explain.
1. Marie Curie's groundbreaking research on radioactivity transformed the field of modern medicine. 2. Although the young engineer designed a more efficient solar panel for rural communities. 3. The telescope revealed thousands of distant galaxies, astronomers began mapping their positions immediately. 4. Every one of the researchers contribute valuable data to the ongoing climate study. 5. Alexander Fleming noticed the mold on his petri dish and realizes its potential as medicine. 6. Innovative thinkers throughout history have challenged assumptions and reshaped entire industries.
Answer Key
1. CORRECT - Complete sentence with a clear subject ("research") and verb ("transformed") that agree properly.
2. FRAGMENT - This is a dependent clause beginning with "Although" that lacks a main clause to complete the thought.
3. COMMA SPLICE - Two independent clauses ("The telescope revealed..." and "astronomers began...") are joined only by a comma, which is insufficient.
4. AGREEMENT - "Every one" is singular, so the verb should be "contributes" rather than "contribute."
5. TENSE SHIFT - "noticed" is past tense, but "realizes" shifts to present tense; it should be "realized."
6. CORRECT - Complete sentence with a plural subject ("thinkers") correctly matched to the verb ("have challenged").
Step 2: Fix Fragments
Each sentence below is a fragment. Rewrite it as a complete sentence on the lines that follow.
1. Although the scientist conducted dozens of experiments over several months. 2. The revolutionary new battery technology designed for electric vehicles. 3. Because renewable energy sources reduce dependence on fossil fuels significantly. 4. Which enabled researchers to sequence the entire human genome for the first time.
Step 3: Fix Run-Ons
Rewrite each run-on or comma splice as two correct sentences (or join them with a coordinating conjunction or semicolon).
1. The invention of the printing press spread knowledge to ordinary people it transformed education across Europe forever. 2. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, they have become increasingly affordable for homeowners in recent years. 3. Scientists studied the ocean floor for decades they discovered hydrothermal vents teeming with unknown life forms. 4. The vaccine was developed in record time, researchers around the world had collaborated and shared their data openly.
Step 4: Subject-Verb Agreement
Rewrite each sentence so the subject and verb agree.
1. Everyone on the international research teams agree that climate change demands immediate action. 2. Each of the groundbreaking inventions have changed the way people communicate across distances. 3. Neither the lead scientist nor her colleagues was prepared for the unexpected results of the trial. 4. The collection of rare fossils from the excavation site reveal evidence of an ancient marine ecosystem.
Step 5: Fix Tense Shifts
Rewrite the paragraph below in consistent past tense.
In 1969, NASA launched the Apollo 11 mission to land humans on the Moon for the first time. The astronauts train for years before the historic flight, and engineers solved thousands of technical problems along the way. When the lunar module touches down on the surface, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the gray soil and has spoken his famous words. Millions of people around the world watched the broadcast and celebrate the achievement. The mission proved that human determination and scientific collaboration makes extraordinary discoveries possible.
